Origin and history
The Fountain of the Town Hall of Pernes-les-Fontaines is part of an ancient water tradition, dating back at least to the 15th century. Municipal archives retain consular decisions, such as that of 1596 prohibiting washing in fountains to preserve water for livestock. This heritage reflects the vital importance of water in daily life and community organization in Pernes, where the sources were both a resource and a symbol of collective prosperity.
In the 17th century, the discovery of a source near the chapel Saint-Roch led to the construction of four new fountains, marking a lasting enthusiasm for these works. This momentum culminated in 1936 with the official addition of "Les-Fontaines" on behalf of the city, sealing its water-related identity. The fountain of the Town Hall, protected since 1928, thus embodies a practical history – supply, hygiene – and cultural, where water architecture shapes the urban landscape and local memory.
The designation of historic monuments in 1928 underscores its heritage value, both for its aesthetics and its role in community life. Owned by the commune, it remains a testimony of past social dynamics, where consuls and inhabitants collectively managed an essential resource. The fountains of Pernes, beyond their primary function, become markers of urban evolution and mentalities, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era.
