Origin and history
The Fountain of La Chaise-Dieu is a granite building dated 1609, located in Place de la Fontaine in the commune of Haute-Loire. It is distinguished by its octagonal structure and its central element in the shape of a truncated pyramid, surmounted by a ball and supported by a square barrel. The ensemble, entirely made of this local material, reflects the architectural techniques of the early seventeenth century.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 26 March 1934, this fountain illustrates the hydraulic and urban heritage of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its inscription bears witness to its heritage value, both for its aesthetics and for its historical role in the water supply of the local community. Today, the fountain remains an emblematic landmark of La Chaise-Dieu.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, specify that the fountain belongs to the municipality and that it is located near the church, in the heart of the village. Its octagonal plan and architectural details, like the summital ball, make it a characteristic example of the monumental fountains of this period in Auvergne. No information is provided on any sponsors or artisans involved in its construction.
