Origin and history
The fountain of the Place de la République, located at the Château-d'Oléron on the island of Oléron, is an iconic Renaissance building. Ranked under the title of historical monuments by order of 24 April 1937, it is distinguished by its neat architecture: a square plan supporting four rectangular basins at its base, surmounted by a central massif decorated with torso columns at the corners. A classic entanglement and a stone dome crown the ensemble, illustrating the local crafts of the mid-19th century.
Created in 1851 by the artisan Jean Paillé, dit Perrin, this fountain embodies the hydraulic and architectural heritage of Charente-Maritime. Its ranking in 1937 underscores its historical and aesthetic value, while at the same time showing the importance of public fountains in the urban planning of small island communes at that time. The monument, owned by the commune, remains a central landmark on the Place de la République, between collective memory and utility function.
The available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, describe a modest and elaborate structure, typical of the local achievements of the late Renaissance. Its location, between Place de la République and rue Omer Charlet, reflects its integration into the urban fabric of Château-d'Oléron. The accuracy of its geographical location is assessed as satisfactory, facilitating its identification in the regional heritage of New Aquitaine.
