Fontaine, in front of the old church: inscription by decree of 6 June 1933

Origin and history

The Maisons-Laffitte Fountain is a historic monument located in the same name town in the Yvelines department of Île-de-France. Built in the last quarter of the 18th century, it was originally integrated into the wall of Maisons-Laffitte Park. This type of fountain reflects the importance of hydraulic and aesthetic arrangements in the public and private spaces of the modern era, often linked to aristocratic or bourgeois residences.

The fountain was listed as historical monuments by an order of 6 June 1933. This protection reflects its architectural and historical heritage value. Today, it is located in front of the old church of Maisons-Laffitte, on the street of the Old Church. Like many fountains of this period, it could serve both as a decorative element and as a water supply point for residents and animals.

The current location of the fountain, in a public space, suggests that it was moved or redeveloped after its initial construction. The 18th century fountains were often symbols of prestige for cities or landowners, while playing a utilitarian role in everyday life. Their preservation allows us to understand the evolution of hydraulic techniques and aesthetic tastes throughout the centuries.
