Origin and history
Munster Fountain is a historic monument located in the city of Munster, in the Haut-Rhin department, in the Grand Est region. It is precisely Place du Marché, a central place in the municipality. Its architecture and location make it a landmark of local heritage, reflecting centuries of urban history and architectural evolution.
Construction of the fountain spans several periods: the 4th quarter of the 16th century, the 18th century, and the 2nd quarter of the 19th century. These successive phases of work demonstrate the changing needs of the population and stylistic changes. The fountain has been listed as historic monuments since December 30, 1985, an official recognition of its heritage value.
The fountain is attributed to Frédéric-Paul Widemann, identified as a masterpiece. Owned by the municipality of Munster, it embodies the importance of public water points in the organisation of Alsatian cities, especially for daily and commercial activities. Its inscription in the Merimée base and its precise location, confirmed by GPS coordinates, reinforce its anchor in local and regional history.
