Origin and history
The Neptune fountain of Remiremont, located in the town of Remiremont, was built in the first half of the 18th century. It embodies the baroque style then in vogue in urban hydraulic creations, combining utility function and monumental decoration. This type of fountain, often decorated with mythological figures, reflected the prestige of cities and their ability to control water supply, a major challenge in modern times.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 20 December 1966, the fountain is part of a protected ensemble including also the fountain of Amphitrite. These two works, located on Rue du Général-Humbert, are owned by the municipality of Remiremont. Their preservation reflects the heritage importance attached to the hydraulic installations of the past centuries, often linked to the beautification of public spaces under the Old Regime.
The monument is located in the department of Vosges (88), in the Grand Est region, an area marked by a rich architectural and urban heritage. At the time of its construction, public fountains played a central role in daily life: they served as a meeting point, provided drinking water, and symbolized municipal power. Their decoration, inspired by Greco-Roman mythology as Neptune, god of the seas, also highlighted the influence of classical artistic models in European cities.
