Origin and history

The fountain of Saint-Jean-du-Poteau is located at the place called the eponymous, in the commune of Plumelin, in the department of Morbihan (region Brittany). Built in the first quarter of the 18th century, it is housed in a moorland environment, surrounded by a rectangular enclosure accessible by side stairs. Its front façade, treated with four pilasters and doric-style mouldings, houses a statue depicting Saint John with a disc decorated with the effigy of the Lamb. Two small niches are set up in the wall of enclosure at the back of the monument.

The fountain was listed as historic monuments by order of 20 March 1934, recognizing its heritage value. Its architecture combines classical elements, such as doric pilasters, and religious motifs, illustrating the importance of sources and fountains in Breton culture, often associated with local cults or pilgrimages. The enclosure and the side stairs suggest a vocation that is both practical and symbolic, probably linked to community rituals or gatherings.

Available sources, including the Mérimée and Monumentum bases, indicate that the fountain is located at the approximate address "5076 Saint-Jean du Poteau, 56500 Plumelin". Its state of conservation and current accessibility are not detailed, but its inscription in the heritage protects its architectural and historical integrity. The Creative Commons license associated with certain photographs of the monument reflects its documentary and tourist interest.
