Origin and history
La Fontaine des Augustins is one of the many fountains of Pernes-les-Fontaines, a village in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Unlike classical spa towns, Pernes-les-Fontaines is distinguished by its forty fountains, whose first records date back to the 15th century. These fountains played a central role in everyday life, as evidenced by a decision of the city's consuls in 1596, prohibiting washing laundry to preserve the cleanliness of the water for livestock.
In the 17th century, the discovery of a spring near Saint-Roch Chapel led the city council to vote for the construction of four new fountains. This enthusiasm for fountains continued until the 20th century, leading in 1936 to the addition of "Les-Fontaines" to the official name of the city. The Augustine Fountain, protected since 1928, embodies this unique hydraulic heritage, symbol of history and local identity.
The fountain is located in Louis Giraud, Vaucluse department, and remains a key element of the urban landscape. Its inscription in the title of historic monuments underlines its heritage importance, while recalling the close link between water, architecture and community life in Pernes-les-Fontaines for centuries.
