Origin and history

The fountain of the Patis is a monumental fountain erected at the end of the 19th century, more precisely in the 4th quarter of this century. It is distinguished by its cast iron structure, a material which is then growing for public works. Located in Tonnerre, in the department of Yonne, it reflects the importance of urban developments related to hygiene and beautification of cities under the Second Empire and the Third Republic.

Designed on the plans of the engineer Etienne, the fountain was made by the contractor Landre. Its designation as a historic monument on 3 April 1995 bears witness to its heritage and architectural value. It is now owned by the municipality of Tonnerre, and its exact location is listed at 9004 Rue du Pâtis. This fountain is part of a broader urban infrastructure modernization movement, where fountains played a central role in water supply and ornamentation.

The monument also illustrates the influence of the industrial techniques of the period, with the use of cast iron, a durable and malleable material. Its architectural style, although not detailed in the sources, probably fits into the eclectic or neoclassical currents typical of the public achievements of this period. The fountain of the Patis remains a significant example of the water and industrial heritage of Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
