Origin and history
The Pilori fountain, located in Saint-Jean-d'Angély (Charente-Maritime), is originally the margin of the well of the castle of Brizambourg, built in 1546. This Renaissance monument, dated by the inscription "IE FVS EDIFY AND ASSIZ THE MVCXVI", is the only surviving vestige. It bears witness to the refined architecture of the period, marked by Italian influences and characteristic carved ornaments.
In 1819 the margin was moved to the place of Pilori, to the site of the former well of the canton, under the reign of Louis XVIII. An engraved dedication recalls this relocation. This transfer is part of a period of post-revolutionary urban redevelopment, where heritage elements were often reused to enhance public spaces.
Ranked a historic monument by decree of 24 or 25 April 1892, the fountain illustrates the growing interest in heritage preservation at the end of the 19th century. Owned by the commune, it remains a symbol of local history, linking the seigneurial past of Brizamburg to the daily life of St. John's Angely. The inscriptions and carved frieze are a remarkable example of the monumental Renaissance fountains in New Aquitaine.
