Origin and history

The François I Fountain is an emblematic construction of Cognac, located in Place de la Fontaine, at the foot of the castle of the city. Although its classical style and materials (local limestone stone) suggest an origin in the 17th century, the local archives attribute its reconstruction to architect François-Nicolas Pineau in the early 19th century. It replaced an earlier fountain with the same name, and was moved a few meters in 1865. His inscription in the Historic Monuments in 1925 devoted his heritage importance.

The building adopts a classic style marked by an oval dome, a triangular pediment adorned with fantastic animal heads, and sculptures (bossages, basins). Its quadrangular structure, partially modified, alternates smooth and stylized plant patterns. The central medallion of the pediment and the marine decorations reinforce its ornamental character, typical of the monumental fountains of the period.

The fountain is part of Cognac's urban history, linked to the water supply and the beautification of the public square. Its location, close to the tower of Count John and the old town gate, highlights its role in structuring the medieval and modern space. The 1925 protection covers the entire structure, now owned by the municipality.

The sources mention an average geographical accuracy (level 5/10), with a confirmed location at Address 2 Place du Canton de la Fontaine. The architectural data come from the Merimée databases and field observations, while its history is based on the work of local historians and the archives of the Historical Monuments.
