Origin and history

The fountain of Thervay, located in the Jura department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, was built during the 2nd quarter of the 19th century. It is located at the intersection of Rue de la Creuse and Rue des Aigeottes, in the place des Swans, in the heart of the village. This monument, still in place today, was designed to meet the drinking water needs of the local population, while playing a central role in the daily and social life of the municipality.

Classified as a historical monument by decree of 31 July 1990, the fountain also includes its surrounding paving in the protection. The building is attributed to a masterpiece named Besand, although little detailed information on its design or architectural style is available. Owned by the municipality of Thervay, it illustrates the importance of water infrastructure in rural villages of the 19th century, where they served as much as for supply as for the structuring of public space.

The location of the fountain, noted with an accuracy considered "a priori satisfactory" (level 7/10), has been documented by sources such as Monumentum and Merimée data. Its official address, rue de la Creuse and rue des Aigeottes, as well as its approximate GPS coordinates (3 Place des Cygnes), confirm its anchoring in the public domain. This type of monument reflects the hygienist and urbanist concerns of the time, marked by a desire to beautify and modernise communal spaces.
