Origin and history
The fountain-lavoir de Paintre is a monument located in the commune of Paintre, in the department of Jura (39), in the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Built between the 2nd quarter of the 19th century and the 1st quarter of the 20th century, it embodies the utilitarian and community architecture of this period, marked by the importance of public water points for the inhabitants. The fountain pavilion, a central element of the building, was inscribed in the Historic Monuments by order of 20 May 1986, highlighting its heritage value and its role in local history.
This type of monument, typical of rural villages, served as both a source of drinking water and a collective washing place, reflecting the social and domestic habits of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the Jura, as in other agricultural regions, the wash fountains were places of encounter and exchange, essential for daily life. Their preservation illustrates the municipalities' attachment to their heritage, as well as the evolution of water construction and management techniques.
Painter's fountain is the property of the municipality, which attests to its anchoring in the public heritage. The available data refer to Bietrix as the prime contractor, although little detailed information on its realization or historical use is provided. Its location, specified as satisfactory (note 7/10), allows to locate the monument at the approximate address of 11 Rue du Lavoir, confirming its integration into the urban fabric of Painter.
