Origin and history
The fountain-lavoir de Pennesières, located in the Haute-Saône department, is an early example of a covered wash, built in the 1st quarter of the 19th century. This monument is distinguished by its architecture closed on three sides, with a facade opened by two bays and two doors. A Latin inscription, "More fluentis aquaæ labuntur lucida nobis", adorns the pediment, adding a poetic dimension to this utilitarian building.
Designed by architect René Attiret in 1822, this wash fountain illustrates the architectural innovations of the time, combining functionality and aesthetics. It is part of a larger complex including a cemetery, also designed by Attiret, reflecting the health reforms of the late eighteenth century, such as the decision of Louis XVI to keep cemeteries away from the city centres. These projects offered architects the opportunity to rethink the public and funeral space.
Classified as a historic monument since August 3, 2004, Pennesières's fountain is now fully protected, as is the adjacent cemetery. This ranking underscores its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its role in 19th century community life. Local materials used by Attiret reflect a pragmatic adaptation of the avant-garde architectural theories of the time.
