Origin and history

The fountain-wash of Bourogne's guard body is an emblematic building of the 2nd quarter of the 19th century, located in the commune of Bourogne, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This monument, classified among the Historical Monuments, illustrates the importance of public infrastructure related to hygiene and collective life in French villages during this period. Its architecture and function reflect the practical needs of the inhabitants, while marking the public space of an institutional presence.

The fountain was designed under the direction of Constant Tisserand, a master work identified in the archives. It was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 6 November 1980, thus highlighting its heritage value. Owned by the municipality, it is located in the public domain, although its cadastre is not specified. Its approximate location, 11 Rue de Belfort, makes it a landmark in the urban fabric of Bourogne.

At the time of its construction, knowledge fountains played a central role in the daily lives of rural and peri-urban communities. They served not only as a place for washing and water supply, but also as a space for sociability, where the inhabitants crossed. In a region like Franche-Comté, marked by an agricultural and artisanal economy, these infrastructures were essential to meet domestic and collective needs, while symbolizing the technical and health progress of the nineteenth century.
