Origin and history

The fountain of Place Saint-Étienne, built between 1547 and 1549 by Jean Rancy, marks the first realization of a public fountain in Toulouse. Commanded by the capituls after a long trial against the cathedral chapter, she uses the water of the Guilheméry aqueduct. Its Renaissance style is distinguished by an octagonal basin, columns from the old fountain of the cloister Saint-Étienne, and an obelisk of red marble added in 1593 by Antoine Bachelier. Four bronze marmousets, melted by Pierre Chevenet, adorn the niches of the pedestal, discarding the water by carved fish.

In 1593, the fountain was restored and enriched under the direction of Antoine Bachelier, with the addition of an obelisk and bronze decorations. In the 17th century, Pierre Affre intervened for new repairs, especially on marmousets. Despite recurring problems of water flow and quality, the fountain remains a central point of the square, reflecting the technical and artistic advances of the time. In 1825, it was connected to the new water castle to improve its water supply to the Garonne.

The fountain underwent several modifications over the centuries, including a major restoration in 1649 and an intervention in 1720 by the engineer Ferrary, who replaced marble elements and adjusted the structure. In the 19th century, it was moved during the redevelopments of the square, especially during the archaeological excavations of the 1980s. Today, it embodies both the Toulouse hydraulic heritage and the Renaissance artistic heritage, while surviving urban transformations.

Place Saint-Étienne, where the fountain stands, is a major historic place in Toulouse, marked by events such as the fighting of the Albigois Crusade in 1216 or the royal celebrations of the 17th and 18th centuries. The fountain, originally designed to meet practical needs, becomes a symbol of prestige for the city. Its architecture, combining marble, bronze and stone, reflects successive stylistic influences, from Renaissance to classicism.

In the 18th century, the square gradually lost its central role in favour of the Place du Capitole, but the fountain remained a visual and cultural landmark. Modern redevelopments, such as the creation of an underground parking lot in the 1980s, necessitated its displacement, also revealing ancient and medieval archaeological remains. These discoveries have enriched the understanding of the neighborhood, from its Roman occupation to its medieval urbanization.

Ranked a historic monument in 1925, the fountain of Saint-Étienne Square illustrates the ingenuity of Toulouse artisans, such as Jean Rancy, Antoine Bachelier or Pierre Affre. Its iconography, combining fantastic motifs and classic elements, makes it a unique example of the southern hydraulic heritage. It continues to attract attention, testifying to Toulouse's turbulent history, between religious conflicts, urban beautification and heritage preservation.
