Origin and history
Lourmarin's public fountain is a historical monument located in the department of Vaucluse, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Built at the end of the 17th century, it is backed by the wall of a house on the public square of the village. Its architecture, sober and functional, reflects the practical needs of the time: to supply water to residents and travellers.
Ranked a historic monument by decree of 22 July 1914, this fountain lost some of its original elements, such as the walk around the basin, which disappeared due to the extension of the public road. The cartridge adorning the fountain no longer bears coats of arms, which limits information about its sponsors or its precise creative context.
The fountain illustrates the importance of collective water points in the provençal villages of the seventeenth century. These works, often placed on the central squares, served as a meeting place and sociability for the inhabitants, while meeting a vital need. Their preservation bears witness to the municipalities' attachment to their utilitarian and historical heritage.
Today, Lourmarin's public fountain remains a significant part of the urban landscape of this village, ranked among the most beautiful in France. It is located at the approximate address of Place de la Fontaine, in the heart of the historic village.
