Origin and history

The Saint-Cornély Fountain, located in Carnac, Morbihan, is a historical monument built in 1661, during the 3rd quarter of the 17th century. It is distinguished by its unique architecture: a square edicle opened on its four sides by doric arcades, surmounted by an arrow evoking an obelisk. Inside, a niche houses a statue of Saint Cornély, protector of herds. Access to the fountain is via four stairs located in the centre of a square space below the square.

The fountain is deeply linked to local religious traditions. Every year, during the forgiveness of Saint Cornély (second Sunday of September), the peasants brought their cattle there to bless him and water him with sacred water, supposed to ensure prosperity and market value. These practices reflect the economic and symbolic importance of the monument to the agricultural community of Carnac.

Ranked a historic monument by decree of 29 March 1935, the fountain illustrates the religious heritage of Breton in the 17th century. Its location, 270 metres west of Saint-Cornély Church, reinforces its anchoring in the city's urban and spiritual landscape. The Rue de la Fontaine, where it is located, bears witness to its central role in the daily and ritual life of the inhabitants.

The building thus combines a utility function (water point) and a sacred dimension, typical of the Breton fountains of that time. Its sober yet elegant architecture, with its doric order and arrow, makes it a remarkable example of the rural Baroque heritage. The property of the municipality now ensures its preservation for future generations.
