Fontaine Saint-Maur : classification by order of 20 April 1927

Origin and history

La Fountain Saint-Maur de Calanhel, located in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany, is a granite construction dating from 1717. It is distinguished by its sculpted elements, including the gable crawlers decorated with wig heads and animals, reflecting a mixture of medieval tradition and typical 18th century ornamentation. The edicle houses a spring whose water flows to a rectangular basin, then a circular basin via a drain, before being evacuated by a second channel.

Ranked a historic monument since April 20, 1927, this fountain illustrates local expertise in sculpture and hydraulic architecture. Details such as wigheads, serving as blaze cul-de-lampe, or the extremities of dog-headed or wolf-headed crawlers, bear witness to a symbolism and a neat art. Owned by Calanhel, it remains a remarkable example of Breton heritage, protected for its artistic and historical value.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its importance in the architectural landscape of the Côtes-d'Armor. Its early ranking in 1927 made it one of the first historical monuments in the region to benefit from such recognition. The fountain, still visible today, offers an overview of construction techniques and decorative motifs in vogue at the beginning of the eighteenth century in Brittany.
