Origin and history
The Saint-Sylvestre fountain, located in Plouzelambre in the Côtes-d'Armor, takes the form of a small rectangular granite oratory, typical of the Breton architecture of the sixteenth century. Its stone vault is surmounted by two crucifixes at the ends, while gargoyles adorn the corners. Inside, a statue of Saint Sylvestre in granite dominates the whole, supplemented by two small basins feeding a large washhouse accessible by side stairs. The whole, entirely granite, illustrates the artisanal know-how of the time.
Ranked a historic monument by decree of November 24, 1930, this fountain reflects the importance of community water points in rural Brittany. The oratory fountains, often associated with local saints, served both as places of devotion and as utilitarian spaces for the inhabitants. The presence of Saint Sylvestre, pope of the fourth century, suggests a medieval or modern reappropriation of an ancient cult, although the current construction did not go back until the end of the sixteenth century.
The precise address, 15 Route de Lannion à Plouzelambre, and its ranking among the historical monuments of the Côtes-d'Armor underline its heritage value. The fountain, owned by the commune, remains a material testimony of the religious and social practices of the Brittany of Ancien Régime, where water, stone and faith intertwined in the daily lives of rural populations.
