Origin and history
The Saint Julitte Fountain is a 16th-century religious building located southeast of the bedside of the Remungol church in the Morbihan department. Today it is located in the territory of the commune of Avellys, a result of the merger of several municipalities including Remungol. Its architecture is distinguished by a swimming pool surmounted by an arcade, which itself has a building with carved representations: Christ between the Virgin and St John on one side, and a Virgin with the Child on the other. The access to the fountain is carried out by six steps protected by a defense for animals, leading to a central basin surrounded by a rectangular wall.
The enclosure and fountain were listed as historic monuments on March 20, 1934, recognizing their heritage value. The structure combines architectural elements typical of the Breton Renaissance, such as the niche moulded in basket handle, flanked by committed columns and surmounted by a granite roof decorated with carved hooks. At the back, a shell niche houses a statue of St Julien (or Julitte according to the sources), highlighting the sacred character of the place. The fountain, owned by the commune, was probably a place of devotion and gathering for the inhabitants.
According to the descriptions available, the site is organized around a ground below, accessible by a staircase, and surrounded by walls delimiting a sacred space. Statues and sculpted motifs, such as the gable hooks, bear witness to a remarkable craftsmanship for the time. Although the sources do not specify its exact use in the 16th century, this type of fountain was often associated with religious practices, pilgrimages or local water rituals, a cleansing element in Christian tradition.
The geographical data place the fountain at the approximate address of 1 Rue de Kernaliguen, on the present territory of Avellys, although its history remains inseparable from the old town of Remungol. Its state of conservation and accessibility are not detailed in the sources, but its listing as historical monuments guarantees legal protection. The photographs available, such as the one credited to XIIIfromTOKYO, make it possible to assess its current state, although the accuracy of its location is assessed as poor (level 5/10).
