Origin and history
The Chorges fountain, dated precisely from 1548 thanks to an inscription engraved on its column, is one of the oldest in the Hautes-Alpes department. Built in pink marble from the quarries of Salados, near the Aiguilles de Chabrières, it stands on Place Lesdiguières, in the heart of the village. Its round style and sculpted degrements evoke a fantastic medieval bestiary, typical of the imagination of the era.
Ranked a historic monument by order of October 11, 1930, this fountain suffered the outrages of time before being largely restored in November 2014. Its material, pink marble, and its iconography make it a rare testimony of Renaissance art in this Alpine region. Salados's quarry, the source of its stone, was also exploited for local constructions, such as Guillestre's.
The fountain plays a central role in the communal heritage of Chorges, symbolizing both the water supply and the artistic heritage of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Its protection as a historical monument underlines its cultural and architectural importance, while its recent restoration ensures its sustainability for future generations.
