Fontaine: entry by order of 10 February 1983
Origin and history
Pousthomy Fountain is a 15th-century building located in the village of Aveyron, Occitanie. It is distinguished by its arch in a third-point cradle, housing a basin fed by an arrival of water. The front arch, moulded and protruding, is closed by walls in large apparatus, while a small rectangular opening, now equipped with a metal door, allows limited access. The long rectangular stone basin, extended by a later walled broken arch, illustrates the hydraulic construction techniques of the medieval era.
Ranked a historical monument in 1983, this fountain is one of the few examples preserved of this type in the region. Its architecture, combining functionality and ornaments (like the birth of the arch), reflects the importance of water points in the organisation of medieval villages. The vault and basin, partially closed, suggest both practical (water supply) and potentially symbolic use, although the sources do not specify its exact use at the time.
The fountain is located on Rue de la Fontaine, in the heart of Pousthomy, and belongs to the commune. Its state of preservation, although marked by later modifications (such as the walling of broken arch), allows to study medieval water supply systems in Rouergue. The available data (Monumentum, Wikipedia) highlight its heritage interest, but do not mention any specific sponsorship or historical context beyond its construction period and its protection in the 20th century.
