The fountain covered: inscription by decree of 18 September 1952
Origin and history
The covered fountain of Avignon is a historical monument located in the city of Avignon, in the department of Vaucluse (84), in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. This monument, whose location is estimated to be satisfactory a priori (note 6/10), is precisely at the 102 Route de Montfavet. Although its exact period of construction is not mentioned in the available sources, its listing as Historic Monuments by order of 18 September 1952 attests to its heritage importance.
Owned by the commune of Avignon, it is part of the protected elements of the local heritage, without its current use (visit, rental, etc.) being specified. The covered fountains, typical of the Mediterranean regions, historically played a central role in the supply of water to the populations. In Provence, these hydraulic structures were often linked to networks of canals or sources, reflecting collective water management essential for agricultural, artisanal and domestic activities.
In Avignon, as in other cities in the region, these fountains could also serve as places of sociability, marking the daily rhythm of the inhabitants. Their architecture, often sober but functional, met practical needs while integrating into the urban or rural landscape. The inscription of the covered fountain in Avignon in 1952 underscores its historical and architectural value, although the details of its origin or possible transformations remain unknown.
