Origin and history
The Fountain of the King, located in Ville-d'Avray in the Hauts-de-Seine, was built in 1723, during the 18th century. This monument is distinguished by its unique architecture: a staircase of five steps to the left, reserved for the king, and a staircase of eleven steps to the right, intended for the public. This symbolic separation reflects the social hierarchies of the time, where access to water, a vital resource, was organized according to rank.
Ranked a Historic Monument by order of 14 April 1942, the fountain was restored in 1852, reflecting its heritage importance. However, it ceased to function in the twentieth century, marking the end of its practical use while maintaining its historical value. Its location, along the National Highway 185, and its approximate address at 5 Rue de Saint-Cloud highlight its integration into the urban landscape of Ville-d'Avray.
The location of the Fountain du Roi, noted with an accuracy considered "passible" (level 5/10), remains a point of interest for visitors. Although its functioning has ended, its status as a listed monument and its monarchy-related history make it a key element of local heritage. Available data, from sources such as Monumentum, confirm its role both utilitarian and symbolic in the history of the municipality.
