Fountain of the Saint (Box ZO 50): inscription by decree of 15 January 1929
Origin and history
The Fountain of Saint de La Veraie Croix is located on Rue de la Fontaine, in the municipality of La Veraie-Croix, Morbihan (Bretagne). Built in the 18th century, it is distinguished by its sober architecture: a rectangular edicle with low bays, topped by a stone pyramid and a cross. Four stone balls on balusters adorn its angles, while carved pillars frame the openings. This monument, a communal property, has been listed as historical monuments since 15 January 1929.
According to a persistent local tradition, the fountain is linked to the whims of time. Pouring water on the sculptures would favor rain, while wiping the characters would bring back the sun. These beliefs illustrate the symbolic importance of fountains in Breton rural societies, often associated with propitiatory or metrological rites, inherited from Christianized pre-Christian practices.
The building, of sober and functional style, reflects the architectural canons of the votive or sacred fountains of Brittany in the eighteenth century. Its rectangular plan and carved elements (chapitals, bases) suggest a classical influence, while remaining anchored in local traditions. The sommital cross recalls its religious use, probably linked to a Marian cult or patron saint, although the sources do not specify its exact dedication.
The fountain is referenced in the Mérimée base under code ZO 50, and its official address (rue de la Fontaine) corresponds to its historical location. Its location, noted as "passible" (level 5/10) by contributors, indicates an average accuracy, without major ambiguity. The photographs available, under Creative Commons license, show an apparent correct state of preservation, although details of possible restorations are missing.
The monument is part of a wider network of protected fountains in Brittany, reflecting the rich water and religious heritage of the region. At La Tréraie-Croix, as elsewhere, these buildings served as gathering points, combining practical (water supply) and spiritual functions (pilgrimages, venerations). Their preservation in the 20th century, through inscriptions to historical monuments, has saved these local identity markers.
No information is available on the contemporary use of the fountain (visits, ceremonies) or any recent work. The sources are limited to architectural descriptions and legal references, without mentioning historical figures related to its construction or worship.
