Origin and history

The Flèche Fountain is an 18th-century public fountain located in Clermont-Ferrand, on Trudaine Boulevard, close to Rue des Archers. It is distinguished by its circular pelvis and quadrangular central barrel topped by a pine apple. Two carved masks, placed on the north and south sides, let the water escape, aligned with the axis of the boulevard. Built in Volvic stone, typical of the region, it illustrates the hydraulic architecture of the Old Regime.

The fountain owes its name to the Knights of the Flèche Corporation, installed since 1737 in the courtyard of the Archers, in close proximity. Originally, it was near the "Lauren Gate", an entrance to the medieval enclosure of Clermont. Ranked a historic monument in 1990, it is one of the three isolated fountains of this period still preserved in the city. Its sober and functional style reflects the drinking water needs of the Clermontian population in the Enlightenment century.

The fountain is part of an urban context marked by the expansion of Clermont-Ferrand in the 18th century. Local corporations, such as the Knights of the Arrow, played a social and festive role, often linked to military or artisanal traditions. Public fountains, in addition to their practical utility, also served as gathering points and decorations to enhance urban spaces in the midst of transformation.
