Origin and history

The Soultzmatt Fountain is an emblematic Alsatian heritage building built during the 3rd quarter of the 17th century. Located precisely rue des Boulangers in the municipality of Soultzmatt, it embodies the civil architecture of this period, marked by a special attention to the public water points, essential to the daily life of the villages.

Ranked among the historical monuments since 1934, this fountain illustrates the importance attached to preserving the utilitarian and decorative elements of the Alsatian villages. Its official inscription, by order of 22 March 1934, underscores its heritage value, both architecturally and historically. The fountain is now part of the communal property, which guarantees its conservation and accessibility.

The historical context of the 17th century in Alsace was marked by a gradual reconstruction after the ravages of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). Public fountains, such as Soultzmatt, played a central role in hygiene, water supply and the social life of rural communities.
