Origin and history
La Fountain de Montazels, located in the Aude department in the Occitanie region, is an 18th-century hydraulic monument. It is distinguished by its large circular basin divided into three sectors by stone arms radiating from a central pyramid. Each of these arms is supported by esse-shaped supports, surmounted by stone carved dolphins. Originally, the water was flowing from the mouth of the dolphins, but today it flows from metal pipes attached to these sculptures. The dolphins, represented with scales and a loved tail, add an artistic and symbolic dimension to the work.
The fountain was built between 1751 and 1784 by three local craftsmen whose names are not specified in the sources. Several interventions marked its history: a repair in 1839 (date inscribed on the basin), the construction of a basin at the source in 1855, and work on the pipes in 1862 and 1876. In 1879, a project to capture three new sources, located 1.5 km west of the village, was launched to compensate for the inadequacy of the original source. Finally, in 1883, masonry pipes were replaced by cast iron pipes. The fountain was listed as historical monuments by order of 12 February 1951.
Architecturally, the fountain consists of carefully worked stone elements, reflecting the know-how of 18th-century artisans. Dolphins, the central elements of the decoration, often symbolize water and protection in Baroque and classical art. Their positioning and design suggest an influence of the monumental Italian or Provencal fountains, common at this time. The fountain, owned by the municipality of Montazels, remains an important testimony of the hydraulic and artistic heritage of the Occitanie region.
