Romanesque fountain of Cayssac: inscription by decree of 9 September 1933

Origin and history

Cayssac Fountain is a small square Romanesque building located at Cayssac in the commune of La Loubière in the northern part of the Aveyron department. Inside, columns support a sculpted arch key that depicts Christ, characteristic of medieval religious art. Its location, below the main street of the village, suggests a function both practical and symbolic for the local community.

Built at the end of the 12th century, this fountain illustrates the importance of water points in medieval villages, often associated with places of assembly or devotion. It also demonstrates the mastery of Romanesque architectural techniques, such as the use of stone arches and vaults. Its inscription as a historical monument on 9 September 1933 underlines its heritage value and its preservation as a rare vestige of this period in Rouergue.

The fountain, owned by the municipality of La Loubière, is now a significant part of the local heritage. Its conservation status and accessibility (noted "satisfactory" according to sources) make it a potential site for visits, although its current use is not specified. Available data from Wikipedia and the Merimée database confirm its protected status and its anchoring in the regional history of Occitanie.
