Origin and history

The Saint-Léger fountain of Montbouton is a historic monument whose first records date back to 1723 and 1731, evoking a source or fountain at this site. These documents attest to the usufruct of this resource, but it was the date of 1844, engraved on the central arch, that marked the layout of the building in its present state. According to the legend, the water of this fountain, channeled by basins and cheneaus covered with slabs, would have healing properties, especially for eye diseases.

The fountain is located in the village of Montbouton, in the Territory of Belfort, an area marked by a complex history, between Germanic and French influences. The village, developed on a hill at an altitude of 500 meters, experienced destruction in the seventeenth century, especially by the Swedes, before being rebuilt. The fountain, like the nearby Saint-Léger Church, reflects the importance of places of worship and gathering in this rural community, where water sources were often associated with popular beliefs and therapeutic practices.

Ranked a historic monument by decree of 6 November 1980, the Saint-Léger fountain includes in its protection the retaining walls and the access staircase. This ranking highlights its heritage interest, both for its architecture and for its role in local collective memory. The fountain remains a symbol of Montbouton's water and religious heritage, in an area where oral traditions and legends have long shaped the identity of villages.

The geographical context of Montbouton, on the border between the Jurassic plateau and plain areas, also influenced the development of the village and its infrastructure. The fountain, as a water point, was able to play a central role in everyday life, especially before the arrival of modern supply networks. Today, it is a testament to the ingenuity of traditional hydraulic developments and their integration into the local cultural landscape.

Finally, the Saint-Léger fountain is part of a larger heritage complex, including the church of Saint-Léger rebuilt in the 18th century. These two monuments illustrate the architectural and social evolution of Montbouton, a village whose population grew in the 19th century thanks to the proximity of Beaucourt's industrial activities. Their preservation allows us to understand the historical and cultural dynamics of this part of Franche-Comté, between rural heritage and modern transformations.
