Origin and history
The Albepierre-Bredons fountain is a medieval building located in the village of Bredons, in the department of Cantal (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). A circular shape with an indefinite style, it is distinguished by a rectangular column supporting a stone basin. A claw carved in the shape of a human mask adorns one of its sides, while a stone gutter, covered with a slab, brings water from the mountain to the basin. This provision suggests that it once contained two opposing claws, thus evoking Romanesque art.
The fountain is closely linked to the history of the monastic church of Bredons. After the fire of the monastery in the 18th century, the inhabitants would have recovered the materials and moved the fountain to its present location. This monument, probably of medieval origin, bears witness to the reuse of architectural elements after the partial destruction of the religious site.
Ranked as historical monuments since 30 June 1987, the fountain is now owned by the municipality of Albepierre-Bredons. Its carved claw and circular structure make it a remarkable example of the region's hydraulic and religious heritage, marked by Romanesque influence and local practices of material recovery after destruction.
The fountain is located at approximately 5016 A La Barthes, in the municipality of Albepierre-Bredons. Its conservation status and location have been assessed as satisfactory a priori (level 7/10), although sources do not specify any recent restorations. Its inscription among historical monuments highlights its heritage importance in the Cantal.
