Origin and history
The Ambonnay fountain, built in the mid-19th century, embodies the hygienic advances of its time. Commanded by the municipality to provide a public water source, it was erected in 1854 by subscription and entrusted to the architect Tortorat. Its location, at the corner of the streets of Bouzy and Trepail, makes it a central point of the village, marked by a hexagonal structure surmounted by a basin.
The fountain, five metres high with a 14-metre-long polygonal basin, was designed to meet the residents' drinking water needs. Classified as a historic monument in 2003, it reflects the daily life of villagers in the 19th century, reflecting the health and social concerns of the period. Its architecture, signed Tortrat, remains a typical example of the urban developments of the period.
Located in Place de la Fontaine in Ambonnay (Marne, Grand Est), it is now protected for its historical and heritage role. The fountain illustrates the development of public infrastructure in rural areas, where access to drinking water became a priority for municipalities. Its designation as a historical monument in 2003 is an important part of local and regional heritage.
