Origin and history

La Fontaine de la Vache is a monument located in Villotte-devant-Louppy, in the department of Meuse, in the Grand Est region. This monument, classified among the Historical Monuments, is distinguished by its fountain, its age and its water pump, typical elements of rural water infrastructure. Its inclusion in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 9 September 1992 bears witness to its local heritage importance.

Fountains such as Villotte-devant-Louppy played a central role in the lives of rural communities. They served as an essential water point for residents and animals, while being a meeting and exchange place. In regions such as Lorraine, where agriculture and livestock were dominant, these infrastructures were vital for the daily life and social organization of villages.

The location of the fountain, along the road from Givry-en-Argonne to Saint-Mihiel, suggests a strategic position for travellers and locals. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair, with an approximate address at 70 Grande Rue. Owned by the commune, it embodies a collective heritage still visible today.

The absence of a precise cadastre and the mention "NO CADASTRE" in the official data indicate an administrative or historical particularity. Available sources, such as Monumentum, confirm its protected status, but do not provide additional details about its origin or past use beyond its hydraulic function.
