Origin and history
The fountain of Signes is a historical monument located in the commune of Signes, in the department of Var (region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur). Built during the 2nd quarter of the 16th century, it embodies a typical example of the public fountains of that time, often linked to the water supply of villages and their social organization. Its architecture reflects the techniques and styles in vogue in the Renaissance Provence, a period marked by an artistic renewal and an improvement of urban infrastructures.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 24 February 1926, the fountain is protected for its heritage interest. It is located in Place du Marché, a central location suggesting its historic role in the daily life of the inhabitants, as a point of assembly and distribution of water. The approximate location, noted as "passible" (level 5/10), indicates that its exact location may require additional verification. Owned by the municipality, it remains a key element of the local heritage, although the available sources (Monumentum, Mérimée base) do not specify its current state of openness to the public or contemporary use.
The department of Var, where Signes is located, was in the Renaissance a dynamic region, marked by trade, flourishing agriculture (wine, olive trees) and a strong community organization. Fountains, like Signes, played an essential role in public hygiene, animal drinking and craft activities. Their construction also reflected the prestige of the villages, often financed by consuls (local magistrates) or lords. Today, these monuments are valuable witnesses to the rural and urban history of Provence.
