Origin and history
The Lebailly forge, built in 1878 in the city of Saint-Pierre, is an emblematic historical monument of the last quarter of the 19th century. It has been completely restored to preserve its original structures, including its tooling dedicated to the marine forge and its characteristic chimney. These elements make it a unique vestige of local industrial activity related to the maintenance of ships and the manufacture of essential tools for the inhabitants of the island.
In the 1960s, the main façade of the forge underwent modifications to accommodate a gallows, thus facilitating the transport of heavy parts. The appentis located at the rear has also been expanded, partially adapting the building to the changing needs of its use. Despite these transformations, the forge retains an exceptional heritage value, illustrating the lifestyle and know-how of the 1920s, when it played a central role in Saint-Pierre's economic and social life.
Today, the Lebailly forge has been listed as a Historic Monument since 16 March 2011, protecting the entire building, its fireplace and its plate plot. She found a new vocation as an educational workshop, allowing to pass on to future generations the craft techniques and industrial history of Saint Peter and Miquelon. Its address, at 5 rue du Commerce, makes it an accessible place and anchored in the local urban fabric.
