Origin and history

La Croix Forhan is a cross located near La Châtaigneraie, in the commune of Guégon, in the Morbihan department (Bretagne). Dating from the seventeenth century, it is distinguished by its octagonal barrel adorned with a spiral stripper bearing indecipherated Gothic inscriptions. The monument incorporates strong symbolic elements: a Calvary with Christ, a Virgin of Mercy (Pietà), as well as the coat of arms of the Rohan (represented by macles) on the node of the hammock. A notable feature is the presence of a knife in relief on one of the sides of the barrel, adding a mysterious dimension to its iconography.

Ranked as historical monuments since 13 May 1937, the Forhan Cross illustrates Breton religious art of modern times. His style recalls that of Trégranteur's broken ordeal, suggesting artistic or historical links with other regional works. The base and the base support a complex structure: two side fins bear the figures of the Virgin and Saint John, while the back has a Pietà. The ensemble bears witness to remarkable sculptural know-how, combining Christian symbols and references to the local nobility (family of Rohan).

Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) highlight its heritage importance, although its exact location is considered poor (precision 5/10). The monument remains accessible to the public, without any restrictions. Its official address, registered in the Mérimée base, is 15 La Châtaigneraie, 56120 Guégon, in a rural setting characteristic of Morbihan. The cross thus embodies both an artistic heritage, a mark of seigneurial power (Rohan) and a place of religious memory for the local community.
