Origin and history

The bourgeois cemetery of Villé is a historical monument located in the Bas-Rhin, Alsace. It was active throughout the 19th century, replacing an old cemetery adjacent to the church built in 1757 by the architect Chassan. This funeral place, used until 1913, preserves tombstones dating from 1804 to 1913, offering an intact testimony of bourgeois funeral practices of the time.

In 1888, a new extramural cemetery was created, ending burials in this bourgeois cemetery. Falling out of date and in poor condition in 1995, it was added to the additional inventory of Historic Monuments on 12 July 1995. The municipality of Villé then undertook restoration works, led by the Société d'histoire du Val de Villé, to preserve this unique heritage.

The cemetery is distinguished by its exceptional state of conservation, with 124 tombs still visible today. It illustrates the evolution of funeral practices and the social organization of the local bourgeoisie in the 19th century. Its architecture and funerary monuments reflect the styles and symbols of the time, making it a privileged place of study for historians and heritage enthusiasts.
