Origin and history

The former Order of Malta of Luzeret, classified as a Historical Monument, illustrates a defensive and religious architecture of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. The site maintains a portal adorned with a mutilated bas-relief and traces of a double drawbridge, demonstrating its strategic role. The inner courtyard reveals ground windows and doors, as well as the remains of four massive towers, now unfurled.

The house bodies, typical of hospital orders, present decorative elements evolving between the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. The double harrowing portal and the murmured door highlight the military and community function of the place. These architectural features reflect the influence of the Order of Malta in the region, mixing protection and welcome of pilgrims or travellers.

The listing of Historic Monuments in 1929 allowed for the preservation of these remains, although their exact location remains approximate (the mapping accuracy considered "poor"). The site, located in Indre, embodies the hospitable and chivalrous heritage of the Centre-Val de Loire, now partially accessible to the public.
