Origin and history

The former Senlis seminary, built in the 17th century, is an emblematic building of the city. Ranked a Historical Monument, it illustrates the religious architecture of this period, marked by the influence of ecclesiastical institutions in the formation of clerics. Its history also reflects urban transformations, from a place of education to civilian uses.

Over the centuries, the building has changed its vocation: after its initial function as a seminary, it became a commercial court, then was converted into a museum. These changes demonstrate the adaptability of the built heritage to the successive needs of society. The facades and roofs, protected by decree in 1970, are now owned by Senlis.

Located in Saint Peter's Square, the building enjoys a central location in the city. Although its geographical accuracy is considered poor (note 5/10), its exact address is attested by Merimée bases and GPS coordinates. The seminar thus takes place in the historical landscape of Senlis, between religious heritage and secular reappropriation.
