Origin and history

The former town hall of Preuilly-sur-Claise, located on Rue Saint-Pierre, is a building dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. This building, which has been listed as historic monuments since 1929, bears witness to the administrative and historical importance of the commune, once surrounded by ramparts and entitled "city". Originally it served as a Protestant presbytery in the 16th century, reflecting the religious tensions of the time, especially after the partial destruction of the city and the abbey in 1562 during the religious wars.

Preuilly-sur-Claise, then the first Baronie de Touraine, played a strategic role at the borders of Bas-Berry and Poitou. The medieval village, structured around the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter and the feudal castle, was a major political and religious center. The former Town Hall embodies this duality between civil power and religious influences, in an area marked by conflicts between Counts, local lords and English occupations, as in 1369 during the Hundred Years War.

The building retains a Renaissance façade, with ancient openings framed with mouldings and two symmetrical turrets resting on corbellations. These architectural elements illustrate the transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, during which Preuilly experienced a demographic and economic boom. The protection of the monument in 1929 underscores its heritage value, in a commune where ten buildings are classified or registered, including the Saint-Pierre Abbey and the castle poterne.

In the 19th century, Preuilly gradually lost its status as an influential capital, but its architectural heritage, like this former Town Hall, recalls its prestigious past. Today, the building is part of a broader historical journey, including 17th and 19th century houses, private hotels and medieval remains, offering visitors a journey through the eras that shaped the Touraine du Sud.
