The fort in its entirety (Box C 1): inscription by order of 22 September 2011
Origin and history
The Fort de l'Ilet-à-Ramiers, located in the Trois-Îlets in Martinique, is a historic monument whose conservation and homogeneity are considered exceptional. Its architecture, history and natural setting make it a unique site, preserved in its entirety. This fort illustrates Martinique's military and cultural heritage, with rare consistency between its natural and built elements.
Listed in the inventory of Historical Monuments by order of 22 September 2011, the fort is now owned by a state public institution. Although its precise location is estimated to be poor (note 5/10), its heritage importance remains recognized. It embodies a period of Martinique history marked by the fortification of the coasts, reflecting the strategic and defensive stakes of the island at a time not specified in the available sources.
Forts in Martinique, such as the Ile-à-Ramiers, often played a key role in protecting the coast from invasions and maritime attacks. Their presence attests to the military and social organization of the time, where they also served as checkpoints for trade and territorial defence. Their architecture, adapted to geographical and climatic constraints, reflects local know-how and the external influences of the colonial era.
