Origin and history

Fort Sénarmont, located in Bessoncourt in the Territory of Belfort, is an emblematic example of fortifications designed after the French defeat of 1871. Built between 1883 and 1886, it is part of the defensive system designed by General Séré de Rivières to modernize border protection. This strong polygonal reflects the military innovations of the time, with a structure adapted to new artillery technologies.

From 1885 onwards, the most vulnerable parts of the fort were reinforced by concrete cladding, illustrating the evolution of fortification techniques in the face of progress in armaments. The monument, now classified, includes elements such as the counterscarp walls and their vaults, witnesses of 19th century military engineering. It is the property of the municipality of Bessoncourt and was registered with the Historical Monuments in 1995.

Fort Sénarmont is part of a historical context marked by the desire to secure the eastern borders after the loss of Alsace-Lorraine. This type of construction, widespread in Franche-Comté, was intended to deter any new invasion while sheltering garrisons capable of resisting prolonged seats. Its architecture also reflects local topographical constraints and defence strategies in depth.

The military architect behind this system, General Raymond Séré de Rivières, marked the history of the French fortifications. His approach combined masonry works, artillery batteries and buried shelters, adapted to the terrain and threats of the time. Fort Senarmont, though modest in size, embodies this defensive doctrine that shaped the French military landscape until World War I.
