Origin and history

The fortifications of Avranches form a defensive complex built in the 13th century to surround and protect the old town. These ramparts, now partially preserved, bear witness to the strategic concerns of the time, particularly in the face of external threats such as the expansionist aims of King Henry III of England. Their construction is in the context of the conflicts between France and England for the control of Norman territories after the loss of Normandy by Jean sans Terre in 1204.

The construction of these fortifications was attributed to the reign of Saint Louis (Louis IX), king of France from 1226 to 1270. Their main objective was to strengthen the defence of Avranches, a strategic city located near the border between Normandy and Brittany, in the face of attempts to win over Henri III. This defensive system included towers, including the Arsenal Tower, also known as the Saint-Louis Tower, which still remains today.

Among the most remarkable remains, the Arsenal Tower was classified as historical monuments by order of 14 May 1937. This tower, located behind the town hall, illustrates 13th century military architecture and is a material testimony of efforts to secure the area. Fortifications, although partially disappeared, remain a key element of Norman medieval heritage, reflecting the geopolitical stakes of the time.

The site is located in the department of Manche, in the Normandy region, and its approximate address is 1 Rue de la Belle Andrine in Avranches. The available data, from sources such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its historical and architectural importance, while stressing the need to preserve these remains for future generations.
