Origin and history

The fortifications of the Saint-Marcouf Islands, located in the municipality of the same name, form an exceptional military complex, representative of coastal defence techniques developed under the First Empire. These works, built in the 19th century, bear witness to the adaptation of military architecture to the strategic needs of the time, particularly to protect the Normandy coast. Their design reflects innovations in fortification, with elements such as enclosures, riders, guard corps, and port and semaphoric facilities.

The island of Earth and the island of the Large harbour separate but complementary structures. On the island of Earth, the enclosure and guard, surrounded by a rider, constitute a compact defensive system. The island of the Large, on the other hand, presents a circular fort, artillery platforms, shops, a powder keg, as well as port facilities (digues, piers, piers) and semaphoric. These developments illustrate the versatility of the islands, both military bases and strategic monitoring points.

Classified and listed as Historic Monuments between 2015 and 2017, these fortifications are fully protected, including their plate floor. Their preservation makes it possible to understand the importance of coastal defences in French military history, as well as their role in protecting the Normandy coast. The Association of Friends of the Island of the Large contributes to their valorization, highlighting their unique architectural and historical heritage.
