Origin and history

The maritime fortifications of La Rochelle preserve the general appearance of the medieval port, with intact elements such as the tower of the Lanterne (15th century, lighthouse), the tower of the Chain (11th century, redesigned in the 15th century, equipped with a mechanism to close the entrance to the port), and the tower Saint-Nicolas (completed in 1384), overlooking the pass. These works, linked by a courtine, bear witness to the medieval defensive systems still visible today.

In the 17th century, faced with the threat of an English landing, the Marshal of Lorges persuaded the government to turn La Rochelle into a strong place rather than to shave it. The engineer Ferry, assisted by Claude Masse, Girval, then Rousselot and Verrier, designed a speaker inspired by the Vauban system (1689). It incorporates medieval fortifications to the south, follows a slightly modified route compared to 1629, and includes five gates (Dauphine, Royale, etc.) and six bastions, including the Saint-Nicolas hornwork. The north and east fronts, masonized, contrast with the earthen escarp to the west.

Work continued in the 18th century, while in the 19th century, the northern front was reinforced by advanced works and courtesines. In 1858, the Saint-Nicolas gate was rebuilt for the station, and the bastion of the Gabut was demolished around 1878. The square was declassified in 1902 (decree applied in 1922). In the 20th century, breaches were opened for the roads (1st quarter) and the extension of the hospital Saint-Louis (3rd quarter), partially altering the enclosure.

The protected elements (classified from 1879) cover the eastern portion of the maritime front, from the Gate of the Ladies to the Lantern tower, illustrating the evolution of defensive techniques from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The site thus blends medieval heritage and Vaubanesque adaptations, reflecting the strategic stakes of the Atlantic port.
