Origin and history
The fortified enclosure of Flaujac, located in Espalion in the department of Aveyron (Occitanie region), dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. It illustrates medieval defensive architecture, with characteristic elements such as a defensive tower with archères and a herse, as well as a round road still visible on several facades. This fortified system, built "with a single jet", also incorporates cross crosses and lintel doors, reflecting a coherent village organization.
The building has been listed as historic monuments since 17 April 1950, recognizing its heritage value. The south-east face, almost entirely demolished, contrasts with the other more preserved sides, where there are still a variety of holes (windows, twined bays). The enclosure bears witness to the period of English occupation in France, marking an era of tensions and defensive reinforcements in the region.
According to sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum), the site also includes protected elements such as door lintels and crosses, located inside and outside the village. These details, combined with the location on the town of Espalion (code Insee 12096), make it a representative set of fortified villages of Rouergue in the Late Middle Ages.
