Fortin says of the two mills: inscription by order of 14 May 1925
Origin and history
The fort of Les Deux Moulins is a military building in La Rochelle, built in the 18th century. It is a dread that forms part of the medieval enclosure of the city, conceived as a fortified entry point. Its name comes from two nearby tidal mills, one of which was about 1200. The present door, dating from the early eighteenth century, replaces an older structure.
The building was listed as historic monuments by order of May 14, 1925, recognizing its heritage value. This fort illustrates the evolution of urban fortifications, combining medieval elements and lighting. It also demonstrates the strategic importance of La Rochelle, a major port city on the Atlantic facade.
Today, the fort of the Deux Moulins belongs to the municipality of La Rochelle. Although its current use (visits, events) is not specified in the sources, its inscription in the heritage protects its architecture and history. The exact location, near the competition promenade, makes it a visible part of the historic urban landscape.
