Origin and history

The Crozatier Fountain is an iconic monument located at Puy-en-Velay, in the Haute-Loire department. Built in 1859, it owes its existence to a legacy of Charles Crozatier, who entrusted its design to the sculptor Astyanax Scaevola Bosio. This monument, which has been listed as a historical monument since 2006, is distinguished by its imposing dimensions, rich statuary and elaborate water games, reflecting 19th century art and engineering.

At the top of the fountain is a female allegory of the city of Puy-en-Velay, recognizable by its crown evoking local fortifications and its symbolic attributes: a scepter surmounted by an eagle and an armored shield. Four sitting figures, representing the main rivers of the Haute-Loire (the Loire, Allier, the Borne and the Dolaizon), adorn the intermediate level. The lower basin, on the other hand, welcomed four groups of children playing, moulded by Charles Crozatier after originals created around 1685 for the gardens of Versailles.

The Crozatier fountain embodies both a tribute to local history and a testimony of 19th century artistic patronage. Its designation as historic monuments in 2006 underscores its heritage importance, both for its aesthetics and for its link to the region's industrial and cultural history. The reuse of elements inspired by Versailles adds a prestigious dimension, mixing royal heritage and contemporary creation.
