Fontaine: registration by decree of 29 November 1948

Origin and history

The fountain of Embrun, classified as a Historical Monument, dates from the 16th century. It is located in the Hautes-Alpes department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, more precisely rue de la Liberté and rue Saint-Hilaire. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments was formalized by decree on 29 November 1948, attesting to its heritage value.

This fountain, owned by the municipality of Emprun, illustrates the importance of public water points in medieval and renaissant cities. At that time, fountains served not only as a supply of drinking water, but also as a place for sociability and urban animation. Their presence often reflected collective organisation and municipal priorities in hygiene and daily life.

Available data from the Merimée database and Monumentum indicate that the location of the fountain is approximate, with an estimated accuracy of 5/10. No further information is provided on its architect, sponsor or any subsequent amendments. The fountain remains an architectural testimony of the modern era in the Southern Alps.
